Massage & Injury

Specialist

Welcome to Plymouth Sports Massage.

Sports massage is an effective treatment aimed at restoring your body and helping you back to full fitness. It is a common misconception that this treatment is only beneficial for those who participate in sport, running and intensive gym work. In reality it offers a benefit for everyone, including people who are suffering with a serious injury, to those with general aches and pains.

As graduate Injury therapists and level 4 sports massage practitioners, we are able to diagnose and treat a multitude of conditions, whether they were sustained whilst engaging in sport or day to day life.

Through our role as sports therapists and injury specialists, we have gained extensive experience in working with people of all abilities, including international athletes.

Furthermore, we  have both achieved first-class degrees and Carl is a Peer-Reviewed author / researcher specialising in exercise, injury and quality of life. If you have a muscle or joint complaint that you would like to have resolved, please get in touch with Plymouth Sports Massage.

About

Sports Massage

What is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is a soft tissue technique which aims to promote healing of the connective tissue, through enhanced circulation and breakdown of scar tissue. It can sometimes be used to invigorate an athlete prior to training or competition.

Sports Massage Benefits

Sports massage has been shown to offer the following benefits: Increased flexibility and joint range of movement (RoM), decreased muscle tension & spasms, improved stress levels & sense of wellbeing and better sleep quality.

Who is it for?

Sports massage is a suitable treatment for everyone regardless of whether they participate in sport & exercise or they simply have general aches, pains and stiffness associated with the activities of daily life.

Are Treatments Painful?

Sports massage has a reputation of being uncomfortable compared to techniques such as Swedish massage. However, it does not have to be painful; with most clients reporting the firmer/deeper strokes as enjoyable.

Bio

Over the past 20 years I have been actively involved in the health & fitness industry primarily as a personal trainer and sports therapist. Having been employed within health clubs and 5 star hotels for the majority of my working life, in 2017 I took the leap to becoming self-employed setting up South Devon Fitness as a mobile personal training service. In 2019 I graduated from the University of Plymouth with a FdSc in Sports Therapy & Injury Rehabilitation (Distinction), followed a year later by a BSc (Hons) in Sports Rehabilitation & Sports Therapy (first-class). During my studies I also became qualified as a Level 4 Sports Massage therapist, and promptly set up Plymouth Injury Clinic based at HQ business centre in December 2019 – which is the location from which Plymouth Sports Massage operates from.

Following on from University, my research, based upon quality of life was published in a peer-reviewed journal, and I continue to be involved in research at this time. As a sportsman I competed in Football, Athletics & Cross Country representing Devon in all three disciplines, however, my career was cut short due to sustaining two broken legs aged just 16. Therefore, I have a natural empathy towards people who are injured and I understand the frustration and often hopelessness of not being able to do the things you enjoy. My role is to address both the physical and psychological aspects of a person’s injury and help them achieve a full recovery in every sense.

Throughout my career I have been fortunate to work with World class kickboxers, British champion boxers, international rugby players, professional sportsmen & women and a few celebrities. However, my passion is to help people from all backgrounds lead healthy, pain free lives and enjoy much improved quality of life.

To ensure my clients receive the optimum treatment for their condition I have endeavoured to exceed the required industry standards to practice as a sports massage therapist. As a member of the Sports Therapy Organisation (STO) I am bound by their strict code of professional ethics and competence, and I am required to complete CPD each year to keep my skills and knowledge up to date. My qualifications are accredited by the University of Plymouth and The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) all of which were achieved at the highest level. I am fully insured, first aid qualified and have a current enhanced disclosure and barring service (DBS). In 2021 once I begin the MSc in Sport Rehabilitation I will also become a member of BASRaT, which is a highly recognised professional body within the rehabilitation profession.
